Action Changes Things

Are you one of those people that moves every which way in order to avoid a change? Didn't you get the memo? The only constant is change. And if we don't learn how to move through it, we get seriously stuck. We wonder, "Why this is happening to me!" And so many of us spend way too much time hiding, bobbing and weaving, in order to stay on the same darn course we are on because.... well, you can fill in the blank here. There are a few ways to begin thinking about how we want to move through change.

  1. Check in with your body - all. the. time. If you are regularly ignoring your rapid heart beat and headaches, or crying before you need to go work, it's time to start making moves away from that thing. If, on the other hand, your body tells you "things are fantastic!" that's where you want to be.
  2. Fake it 'til you make it. You've probably heard this phrase before. Acting as "your future self" will give you lots of insight about your present situation. Be yourself and experiment how others receive you. Then repeat #1. Play with new roles and have a little fun with your future self until things fall into place all around you and your future is here now.
  3. Get rid of the words, "I need to...I should...I have to..." Those phrases make it sound like there's no way out. That something is way more important than it probably needs to be. Whatever follows those phrases are usually questionable activities that are validating your desire to avoid change. Especially if you say them with exasperation!
  4. Find time for yourself. In whatever form feels good, find it.

DOING things, even these little things, will allow you get off the endless merry-go-round of research and planning your next steps. Action allows you to personally dissolve parts of your identity to become whatever you want. We've all heard the story about the guy who chucks the big lucrative career to run the local hometown grocery shop, or the woman who makes a break from law firm partner to open a bakery, or the young professional who doesn't need to grasp onto his job, and receives a giant promotion.  It's these inspiring stories that make us all wish it was happening to US. But why?Because that change might be awesome! It can still be quite scary, but there's a reason we were all billion-dollar PowerBall "winners" for a few days! Fake it 'til you make it!!

I wish I could write something you've never heard before, but the real lesson is to embrace change and move forward, move through it - no bobbing and weaving.Have the courage, know when to leave, and know when to leap in.
